Post-Britpop

Post-Britpop came in the late 90's and early 00's, and had many of the same characteristics of the original genre of Britpop. Though now, there was a much heavier American indie rock influence on the music and it was a lot more experimental.
Coldplay has had a lot of success and is definitely one of the most popular post-Britpop groups.

When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone, but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Britpop

Britpop is a sub genre that originated in the UK independent music scene during the early 90's. It was largely in reaction to Grunge which was so popular in the states. Britpop drew a lot from the pop music of the 60's and 70's, and was mostly original, catchy music performed by groups. There was a lot of reference to pop culture of the time and places in the UK, to draw in the young listeners.

One of the most well known  Britpop songs here, is Wonderwall by Oasis.

Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now

Post-Grunge

Post-Grunge is very similar to Grunge. It has all the same characteristics and spirit, but is more commercial friendly. It had it's time during the late 90's and early 00's.

Matchbox Twenty is a post-grunge band, this is one of their songs.

But I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell

I know right now you can't tell
But stay awhile and maybe then you'll see
A different side of me
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little impaired
I know right now you don't care
But soon enough you're gonna think of me
And how I used to be

Grunge

Grunge was heavily influenced by punk, heavy metal and indie rock. There was a lot of electric guitar, rougher -almost growling- vocals, contrasting dynamics and the lyrics were often pretty angst filled.
Grunge became majorly successful in the early 90's due to the release of Nevermind by Nirvana and Ten by Pearl Jam. Come mid 90's, after the death of Kurt Cobain, Grunge was on the decline.

With the lights out, it's less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us
A mulatto
An albino
A mosquito
My libido
Yay! [x3]

What is it?

Alternative Rock is a genre that is an umbrella term for many sub genres. For a long time indie was an interchangeable name for this genre, because it emerged from the independent music scene of the 80's and 90's. Alternative is usually differed from mainstream rock by the distorted guitar and sometimes controversial lyrics that are presented in a very nonchalant way.
There are many sub genres, but I am only going to talk about a few. Which are: grunge, Britpop, post-grunge and post-Britpop. The sub genres definitely differ and are easily distinguished.
